Why one average can mislead
Published speed ranges often combine different ages, occupations, test lengths and scoring formulas. A prose test and a code test do not require the same movements, while a one-minute sprint is less stable than a sustained result.
Compare your results with your own recent baseline first. If you use external benchmarks, confirm whether they report raw or net WPM and what accuracy rules apply.
Define a useful personal goal
Choose a target connected to a task: taking notes without falling behind, entering records accurately, writing code comfortably or meeting a known assessment threshold.
Pair speed with an accuracy goal. Increasing raw WPM while adding corrections may not improve real productivity.
