Convert using five characters per word
Divide characters per minute by five to estimate words per minute, or multiply WPM by five to convert back to CPM. For example, 250 CPM equals 50 WPM. Spaces and punctuation count as characters under this convention; it does not count literal dictionary words.
The converter changes the unit, not the quality of the score. A raw CPM input produces a raw WPM equivalent. Use correct-character CPM for a net equivalent, and check the scoring method when comparing results from different tests.
Estimate typing time with realistic inputs
Use a speed you can sustain on similar material when estimating document time. An estimate based on a short sprint can be optimistic for a long document. Thinking, reading source material, editing and taking breaks add time beyond uninterrupted transcription.
If you do not know your current speed, take a typing test first. Use the WPM guide to understand the calculation and the average-speed guide to put your result in context. The converter itself does not measure accuracy or test keyboard skill.
